Boards of Inquiry

Christine Paquette (Storey) v. Dr. George Pantazopoulos and Stelios Pantazopoulos

In March 1997 a board of inquiry found that Christine Storey was fired from her job at Fitness Adventure in Regina because she was pregnant and, in the employer's eyes, would not project a favourable image for a fitness centre.

The board ordered Dr. George Pantazopoulos and Stelios Pantazopoulos to pay Storey $8,148 in damages for lost wages, interest, and injury to feelings.

The board noted that Stelios Pantazopoulos did not attend the hearing and that Dr. George Pantazopoulos refused to testify and provide an explanation for his conduct. It accepted the uncontradicted evidence of Storey and the woman who replaced her. Both of them testified that Dr. George Pantazopoulos said Storey would be "getting heavy" because of her pregnancy and he felt having a pregnant woman running the fitness centre would be bad for business.

Commission Releases Employment Equity Report ...continued

The report lists eight suggestions that may help the employment equity advisor firm up the commitment of senior managers.

Cracking the glass ceiling A key area most equity workplaces are not tackling in any systematic way is the that of the glass ceiling. A workplace is said to have a glass ceiling when the number of people from the designated groups gets proportionally smaller as you move up the organizational ladder.

In equity workplaces in Saskatchewan, there are a smaller proportion of designated group people in management than in the organization as a whole. For example, equity statistics show that while women make up 45.7% of the workforce, only 32% of them are managers. In senior-level management, this drops to 20.2%.

Aboriginal employees are represented in management positions at 2.5%, while they are 5.2% of equity workplaces.

The report lists seven suggestions that may help equity workplaces break the glass ceiling.

Employment equity report

The Commission issues an employment equity report every year, which is released at the Employment Equity Seminar in June. This year's seminar - June 23-25 - was in Regina and was sponsored by the Commission, provincial crown and treasury board corporations, the Crown Investments Corporation, the Public Service Commission, and federally regulated companies.

Copies of the report are available from the Saskatoon and Regina offices.
