In recognition of the International Day of the Elimination of Racism on March 21, 2010 please view and read the stories behind two winning Saskatchewan school videos about diversity.
Ecole College Park School's "We Belong" story and video
Ecole College Park School staff and one parent decided to submit an application for a Best Buy grant to support the school in purchasing technology. When they decided to make a video, they felt it would be great for Best Buy to know something about the school, who they were, and what they were about. Ecole College Park is a very multicultural school; they often feel like a mini United Nations. All agreed that they wanted students coming to the school to feel welcome. The video was meant to capture the school's unique differences and at the same time show that they all get along, appreciate diversity and feel that everyone belongs.
George Vanier Catholic School's "Celebrate Our Differences" story and video
In 2008 three students from Grade 7 at George Vanier created a video for the March 21st Racism.Stop It! video competition. It was an optional assignment and they created the video in their spare time in and out of school. They mailed away the video to Ottawa and a month later they got a phone call and learned their video was choosen to be in the top ten. And because of this... they had won a 4 day trip to Ottawa! They flew to Ottawa and got to experience our capital city and an amazing awards ceremony! It was an experience they will never forget. The student's video spread the message to celebrate people's diversity and the rewarding trip to Ottawa made a huge difference in their lives. They met other students all across Canada and got to live their message! It was a learning experience of a lifetime!
The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission gratefully acknowledges Ecole College Park and George Vanier Catholic Schools for the use of their videos. |
